A businessman, a broker and a Public Services Agency officer are being investigated for importing trucks from the European Union that were declared and customs-cleared as relatively new despite being more than 12 years old. The Customs Service says the scheme has been running since 2022.
Imported older trucks carry a larger excise duty than newer ones. The Customs Service estimates the damage from the tax evasion at over one million lei.
On January 19, the authorities seized three trucks and information technology equipment that will serve as evidence.
Three people, Moldovan nationals aged between 44 and 62, are under investigation in the case.
