Three busiest border crossings to be modernized

Moldova’s three busiest border crossing checkpoints – Sculeni/Sculeni, Leușeni/Albița, and Giurgiulești/Giurgiulești – will be modernized under a project integrated into 2014-2020 Romania-Moldova Joint Operational Program, funded by the Union European and co-financed by the two governments.

Contacted by IPN, Customs Service press officer Olesea Pușcașu, says that the development of the terms of reference is underway, after which a tender will be launched for selecting the contractor. The upgrades will be done step by step, without jeopardizing border traffic.

The project provides for the increase in the number of control lanes, the reconstruction of the access roads that connect the customs post to national highways, the rehabilitation of the platforms for scanning vehicles. Also, new screening equipment is envisaged as well as upgrading of lighting and signalling systems.

The project will last 36 months and its budget is 5 million euros. The grant offered to Moldova by the EU constitutes € 3.2 million, and the Moldovan government contributes 1.7 million euros.
