Those who will corrupt voters face fines and jail terms

Parliament adopted in the first reading a bill that institutes fines and jail terms for election runners who will corrupt the voters, Info-Prim Neo reports. The penalties include fines of 4,000 to 10,000 lei, with the person being banned from holding certain posts or performing certain activities for a period of up to three years, and one to five years’ imprisonment. The category of goods that cannot be offered to voters will include food products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and tobacco products. Unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea intervened, saying the electoral candidates must not be punished if they offer water to voters during electoral meetings. The electoral propaganda objects and materials paid from the electoral fund, which carry the name and surname of the electoral candidate and, respectively, the name of the party do not form part of banned goods. They include flags, books, bags, T-shirts, caps, scarves, and vests. The condition is that they must not exceed the value of 40 lei per unit. The bill authors, Liberal-Democratic MPs, said this law will contribute to improving the legal measures aimed at combating the corruption of voters.
