Moldova is the only Latin country on the European continent that does not form part of the EU. The European Union is the only place where the country should be and the integration into the EU means movement forward, while those who propose other options want the country to go backward, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) Vlad Filat said in the first Facebook Forum staged in Chisinau, IPN reports.

“We must implement the promised reforms, adjust the legislation and ensure the functioning of the state institutions. Now Moldova is finally advancing on the path to European integration,” said Vlad Filat.

According to him, after the Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit, where Moldova is to initial the Association Agreement with the EU, probably a more difficult stage will begin, but the Moldovans will have experience, support and the secured prospect behind. “The European integration is a continuous process, especially today, when all the decisions are taken quickly. After the accession to the EU, we will continue this process,” said the leader of the PLDM.

He also said that the European course is not an aspect of the foreign policy only. It is first of all an internal process that implies the adjustment of the legal framework, the ensuring of the functionality of the institutions, etc. “The parliamentary elections of next year will not be only an internal policy element. People’s options will also determine the country’s foreign course. The people will choose between the EU and an anachronous government that will keep the country in the same state,” he stated.

Vlad Filat said he does not want Moldova to be the ‘Cinderella’ of the EU and the speed at which the country will move towards the EU depends on the Moldovans. Moldova will form part of the great European family when it is ready and the Moldovans will not lose their identity when they integrate into the EU. On the contrary, they will be able to promote the national traditions and to make them known in more countries.
