Thirteen more police officers to stand trial in case of Braguta

Another 13 police officers of the remand prison of the Chisinau Police Division will be tried for using inhuman treatment against Andrei Braguta who died in penitentiary. Two months ago, three inspectors of the remand prion and four detainees who stayed in the same cell as Andrei Braguta were brought to justice in the same case, IPN reports.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said that Andrei Braguta was placed in a cell alone the next day after he was ill-treated by the four detainees. He was held there for about a week (August 17 – 23, 2017) in conditions that didn’t meet the detention standards. As a result, he got purulent bilateral bronchopneumonia, which led to the man’s death, according to the medical-legal examination.

Andrei Braguta was arrested on August 15, 2017 for use of violence against police officers. On August 26, he died in Penitentiary No. 16 of Pruncul.

If they are found guilty, the culprits will serve three to eight years in jail or will be fined 67,500 to 80,000 lei and in both of the cases will be banned from holding particular posts for a period of five to ten years.

The prosecutors continue to investigate the actions by decision makers of the state institutions in whose custody the victim was. There were started two distinct criminal cases, over abuse of power and over violation of the rules and methods of providing medical assistance out of negligence.
