Things didn’t change for Moldova after EP elections, opinion

Things didn’t change for Moldova after the elections to the European Parliament held last Sunday. On the contrary,  there was specified a status quo that places Moldova in a difficult situation. The rhetoric about the impossibility of enlarging the European Union will be maimed and the Moldovans should understand this, ex-MP Valeriu Munteanu was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel.

“Exactly the same government that conveyed the same message – that the EU will not be enlarged, that the Euroscepticism problem should be solved (...) will exist at EU level. That’s why I consider the thinking paradigm of the politicians in the Republic of Moldova should be changed from now on and these should be very sincere and say that Moldova has no prospects of integrating into the EU in five or ten years. That’s why the union with Romania is the only solution that exists now for Bessarabia,” stated Valeriu Munteanu.

Former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Valeriu Ghiletski said he does not think that the parties in Moldova put high hopes in the EP elections. These elections do not have a direct impact on any of the governments of the EU member states, not mentioning Moldova.

According to Valeriu Ghilețchi, the political crisis in Moldova and the Moldova – EU Association Agreement could have motivated the people to go out and vote in a large number. “I presume such a high voter turnout wasn’t anticipated. More polling stations and booths could have been established. The large number of voters at those elections is gladdening,” he stated.

Public policy expert Ștefan Gligor said that even if the right to vote was obstructed in the Republic of Moldova, historical results were achieved when populism was ignored and the people decided to pronounce and change things. “We witnessed a radical change in Ukraine. There are big expectations there and we will see what happens in the neighboring country. We are also close to big changes in Romania. I’m glad that there is good news at regional level,” he stated.

According to the partial results presented by the Central Election Bureau of Romania, the PNL got 26.35% (10 seats), PSD – 23.16% (9 seats) and USR-PLUS – 21.24% (7 seats). The Pro Romania Party, which includes former Moldovan prime minister Iurie Leanca no.4 on its list, got 6.77% and only 2 seats. UDMR and PMP also secured 2 seats each with 6.19% and 5.64% respectively. ALDE won only 4.13% of the ballot.
