There is no time for a referendum, Mihai Ghimpu

Caretaker President Mihai Ghimpu considers there is not enough time to hold a referendum to choose the procedure for electing the head of state – in Parliament or directly by the people, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ghimpu stressed that even if a referendum is not held, the early elections should take place only after article 78 of the Constitution is modified. “Let's imagine that a referendum is held in autumn and the people vote in favor of electing the head of state directly. The President is to be elected afterward. But the legislation says there should be an interval of 120 days between a referendum and elections. Spring will come by then and we also have local general elections,” the head of state said. “It is not easy to organize three elections one after another when there is not enough mopey.” Prime Minister Vlad Filat, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Thursday said that the PLDM wants constitutional referendum and legislative elections in autumn, simultaneously with the presidential ones. Earlier, the chairman of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu said the early parliamentary elections could take place in autumn.
