There is no need to change format of peacekeeping operation in security zone, Transnistrian official
There are no reasons at the moment for modifying the format of the peacekeeping operation in the security zone, said Oleg Beleakov, the co-president of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) on behalf of Transnistria, when speaking about the Commission's work this year, Info-Prim Neo's correspondent in Tiraspol reports.
According to Beleakov, 2009 was an organized year for the JCC. There was signed the plan of joint measures, which allowed coordinating the joint work of the peacekeeping forces.
In particular, there were held two joint military exercises in the security zone.
The Commission also took measures to prevent the trafficking in arms in the security zone by civilians. Oleg Beleakov said control posts of the joint peacekeeping forces work in the security zone. They check the units of transport in order to avoid trafficking in arms, munitions, explosive and toxic substances.
The Transnistrian delegation to the JCC insists that the Moldovan police working in Bender town, which was declared zone with increased security regime, should be transferred to the neighboring village, Varnita. According to Oleg Beleakov, the Commission aims to identify a mechanism for normalizing the work of the police in Bender.
The co-president of the JCC also said that the situation in the security zone is monitored by military observers representing Russia, Ukraine, Moldova and Transnistria. The information is included in the joint military reports of the peacekeeping forces that are presented weekly to the Commission, which works in Bender.
Oleg Beliakov stressed that the current peacekeeping operation is efficient and there is no need to change its format.
The Joint Control Commission was constituted in 1992 under an agreement singed by Moldova and Russia. It consists of delegations of Moldova, Russia and Transnistrian. Military specialists of Ukraine and representatives of the OSCE Mission to Moldova attend the Commission's meetings as observers. The Commission coordinates the work of the peacekeeping forces in the security zone.
The Moldovan authorities has pleaded for the transformation the present format of the peacekeeping operation into a civilian operation involving international observers.
