Czech MEP Radka Maxová said the situation in Ukraine is explosive, but the developments in Belarus and Kazakhstan continue to be monitored. According to her, they are all extremely worrisome. As regards the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, the MEP, who is a member of the Delegation for EU-Republic of Moldova Cooperation, noted there is no danger of a military conflict there. This frozen conflict can be solved in a peaceful way and this can be done only after the Russian troops are withdrawn, IPN reports.
“The general opinion is that we must support the negotiations at diplomatic level as it was proven that this is the best method of resolving such conflicts,” Radka Maxová (of S&D) stated in an interview for RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service. Moldova is a partner of the EU and strong partners are needed in this area. The MEP considers cooperation with Moldova should be extended. As regards the entry into the EU, everything depends on Moldova, on how it fulfills the entry conditions.
Radka Maxová also referred to the conditions for providing €600 million in EU funding to Moldova during the next three years. The assistance will become available only if a series of conditions are met, including the implementation of reforms related to the rule of law, democracy and human rights. She said that she is satisfied with the pro-European developments in Moldova and considers that the EU’s support for Moldova will further encourage the country reformation process.
“The coronavirus pandemic and the measures taken to counteract this had both economic and social consequences. That’s why the European Commission at the end of January approved the proposal concerning a new macro-financial assistance program of €150 million for the next two years. This money will support the Moldovan economy. This support will come in addition to the €60 million in non-reimbursable assistance that will be offered to Moldova to help it cope with the energy crisis as part of the Economic Recovery Plan of €600 million for the next three years. The energy crisis affected the whole Europe, but we realize that Moldova is under additional pressure from this viewpoint,” stated the MEP.
