The base salaries of Moldovan teachers will increase from 1 January 2024, announced Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun during a live stream event.

“Granted, the salary is insufficient today. Everyone knows this. It will be increased on January 1, 2024, as is the case with all public sector employees. When we talk about significant, spectacular raises of 30, 40 or 50 percent, we must understand that, realistically speaking, these will not occur until better use is made of funds allocated to our educational system”, said the minister.

In his opinion, more needs to be done to ensure that the existing resources are spent wisely. “And here the Ministry will have a stimulating approach, offering incentives for parents who will choose to send their children to better schools nearby. The Ministry will invest massively in at least one school at the district level so that it becomes a pole of attraction for parents, for children, to ensure quality education. If we manage to do this quickly enough, boldly enough, with a lot of communication, understanding and a stimulating approach, we will also have the necessary resources to be able to reach the salary level that everyone wants”, said Dan Perciun.

The minister added that Moldova spends 5.8% of its GDP on education, much above the European average. For comparison, Romania allocates 3.2% of GDP to the education system. “This means that there needs to be a discussion about how the existing resources can be better spent and how they can be directed to salaries”, Dan Perciun declared.
