The freedom of press in the Republic of Moldova is missing is presented in the last 2006 report of the International Organization Freedom House. The statute of a country were freedom of press is missing is attributed to the Republic of Moldova for the first time after the soviet period. At the seventh edition of the World Press Freedom Day that is celebrated on May 3, the journalists from all around the world will organize different events, militating especially against the media intoxication and disinformation, abuses that endanger the activity of the mass-media and of the freedom of expression. On this day, according to the International Federation of Journalists, there will be expressed professional solidarity for the journalists that sacrifice for the right of the people to be informed, for democracy and for the observe of the fundamental human rights. In a declaration of the Journalist’s Union of Moldova (UJM) is mentioned that in the Republic of Moldova “the right of the persons to know their fundamental rights and also democracy are only declarative and journalists show their solidarity only in superficial actions rather in the hard and risky fight for a real and efficient freedom of press. This is caused by the constant and disgraceful degradation of the freedoms in the Republic of Moldova, especially the freedom of press” is presented in a declaration of the most numerous professional organizations of journalists from Moldova. UJM states that “in the situation of ambiguous governance, lack of a mature political elite and European mentality, in the conditions of a quasi-existent political opposition, which is not capable to penalize the anti-democratic actions of the government, - the ethical journalism and independent journalism become categories of first importance for the future of the Republic of Moldova as an European and democratic country. More, in the declaration is stated that “this fact is acknowledged by the communist governance that is using all the mechanism for dispersing the journalistic organizations and for destroying the independent press that is the last true voice that disturbs the plans of an autocratic Republic of Moldova”. “In the Republic of Moldova the independent press is not yet interdicted but it is threatened and harassed by the government, against it being used the state settlement, law or security bodies” is presented in the declaration of UJM. On the other hand states the quoted source the propaganda work of the employees of the controlled media is encouraged. The increasing number of controlled media institutions diminishes every year the journalists’ possibility to perform their activity correctly and in accordance with ethical principles. “The refuse of the government to create, in accordance with the legislation, authentic public institutions and to cease the continuous manipulations of the local media proves the fact that only the government is guilty of the democracy’s degradation process in Moldova” is also mentioned in the declaration of UJM. In the message presented by The International Press Institute is said that in 2005 journalists were killed at every 5-6 days. 65 of them died during their professional work activity. According to the forecasts of the organization “Reporters without Frontier” 2005 was not only a year of increased cases of aggressions against press but also of sophisticating the nature of these aggressions. In the last year, at least 63 journalists were killed during their job, with 10 cases more than in the last year.
