The municipal police requested local authorities to re-examine the placement and functioning authorisations currently held by the owners of warehouses placed on Bulgara Street and Alexandru cel Bun Street. The head of the Municipal Police, Iacob Gumenita states that the police inspected this perimeter for 6 months and established that all individuals persons and legal entities that own warehouses and are engaged in selling paint and chemical product, have all needed authorisations to operate, in spite of the fact that their activity is neighbouring inhabited areas. Thus their activity is not lawful in this area, states Gumentia. The police forwarded 16 notifications addressed to the District Office and the Trade Department, requesting the withdrawal of such authorisations. However, no such actions where undertaken, the head of the City Police confirms. “There is a significant risk that such a fire will happen again” stated Gumenita. He believes that firemen had considerable difficulties in stopping the fire from extending on Tuesday, in several warehouses storing paint and other industrial commodities on Bulgara Street. The main impediments were posed by traffic in this area. Due to vehicles parked in this area, the access of firemen was restricted. Moreover, the owners of warehouses started the evacuation of goods, creating disorder for a short period of time, mentioned Gumenita. The fire started in one of the 17 apartments placed in a courtyard on Bulgara Street. 16 flats were transformed into warehouses, while one of them was inhabited. At the time when the fire started, the inhabitants were out of their flat. No victims were registered. The extinction of the fire which covered the 200m area required 11 firefighter squads. Authorities continue the investigation into the source and factors leading to the fire.
