The Nistru conflict serves Voronin’s and Smirnov’s personal interests - Parliamentary Opposition
Speaker of Parliament Marian Lupu and EU Special Representative for Moldova Adriaan Jacobovitz de Szeged stressed during a meeting the importance of consolidating interparliamentary relations with Ukraine and Russia with a view to making best efforts to settle the Transnistrian dispute.
According to a press release from the Parliament, interlocutors have broached subjects related to the process of implementation of the EU-Moldova Action Plan. In this regard, Lupu reiterated Moldova’s position to negotiate a new legal framework in the relations with the EU.
Szeged labelled the cooperation established with Chisinau authorities during his mandate as very good and the successful implementation of the provisions outlined in the EU-Moldova Action Plan as very important.
According to a press release from “Moldova Noastra” Alliance (AMN), the leader of the party met with the European official too. AMN leader appreciated that during a six-year period Moldova’s present leadership showed incapacity to take concrete steps towards the country’s reintegration, a fact that “reduces the chances of settling this dispute”. Urecheanu admitted that the solutions are intentionally blocked by Voronin and Smirnov, who have personal interest in the Nistru conflict.
“Moldovan authorities behave as simple observers, expecting that OSCE, EU or other participants will settle the dispute”, AMN leader noted. But he thinks solutions acceptable both for the parties involved and foreign partners must be looked for more actively. Russia’s, Ukraine’s and Romania’s role is very important, this is why they must not be treated irresponsibly, a fact proved by the statement of President Voronin made last year”, Urecheanu reminded.
EU Representative remarked that Chisinau authorities seek solutions to the Transnistrian dispute and that the government’s approach is to be supported. Ambassador Jacobovits de Szeged mentioned that Moldova’s reintegration is a priority of his mission, a fact that makes him to become more resolute in considering all the viewpoints, including that of the Opposition.
