The International Book Fair gathers a record number of visitors

This year’s edition if the International Book Fair is gathering a record number of visitors. So far, the Fair has been visited by nearly 7.5 thousand persons, their number continuously increasing. The organisers estimate the number of visitors to reach 10 thousand by the end of the Fair. The publishers who exhibited their volumes at the expo-fair say that the books are selling well. The buyers prefer reference books, such as dictionaries and schoolbooks, but also new volumes by contemporary authors. The results of the Fair, made public by the director of the National Library Alexe Rau at a press conference on Tuesday, show that the XVI edition of the Fair brought together 83 publishing houses from 16 countries of the world. The participants exhibited 4.5 thousand books, magazines, CDs and other types of publications, and launched 103 new books. Besides the expo-fair, which will be open to the public until September 10, the Fair comprises 9 other exhibitions, including a unique exposition themed “The Rulers of Moldova”, an exhibition of bookplates, one dedicated to the EU enlargement and themed “Hello Europe”, art and sculpture exhibitions. In addition, 14 cultural and scientific events took place as part of the Fair. According to the director of the National Library, of particular interest was the launch of “The Voltaire Quay” (the club of bibliophiles of Moldova), the roundtable themed “What is the Good of Books in Times of Poverty?”, “The Spoken Book” about the late renowned philologist Ion Osadcenco, the top-10 most popular books.
