Term for paying indexed savings to Transnistrian depositors could be extended

The term for paying indexed savings to the depositors from the Transnistrian region could be prolonged until 2010. Such an initiative was put forward by the Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent in the region reports. According to the program of the Transnistrian authorities, the indexation was to be carried out in three stages. From January 1 to July 1, 2007, the indexed savings in Transnistrian rubles had been paid to the invalids of the Second World War. Between July 1, 2007 and January 1, 2009, the indexed deposits have been paid to war veterans, while after January 1 the indexed savings will be paid to other persons that deposited money in Soviet banks. For the first 1,000 Soviet rubles, the ratio of one Soviet ruble to one Transnistrian ruble is 1:1, while for the rest of the sum – 5:1. A sum of 6 million Transnistrian rubles (about $771,000) was earmarked in 2008 for the purpose. 15 million Transnistrian rubles ($1.765 million) is needed for the second indexation stage, without taking into account the rate of inflation, which hit 20.44% this year, as against 12% projected by the Transnistrian economy ministry for this period.
