Unaffiliated councilor Teo Carnat said he will renounce the seat in the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) if it is established that this post is incompatible with that of member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates, to which he was recently elected. Contacted by IPN, Teo Carnat said he has 30 days at his disposal to assess the situation.
Secretary of the Central Election Commission Andrei Volentir has told IPN that the seat of local councilor is incompatible with that of member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates. Under the Law on the Supreme Council of Magistrates, the members of the Council, elected from among law professors, are liable to the same restrictions as the judges. They must not form part of political parties, be members of Parliament or councilors within the local public authorities.
As Teo Carnat entered the CMC on the list of the Liberal Party, if he gives up the seat of councilor, his place will be taken by the next substitute candidate on the party’s list.
The leader of the Liberal faction in the CMC Ion Gabura said that Neofit Josan, vice director of SC “Alcosinter-Plus”, comes next on the list.
Parliament elected Teo Carnat as a member of the Supreme Council of Magistrates on December 24, together with another two law professors, Violeta Cojocaru and Gheorghe Avornic. They will hold office for a four-year period.
