The Joint Control Commission will hold an emergency meeting on April 27 in connection with new the tensions that appeared in the Security Zone after the Transnistrian side unilaterally decided to install checkpoints near Varnita village, acting Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov has told IPN.
“The cause of tensions in the Security Zone is the unilateral actions taken by representatives of the Transnistrian administration against the state institutions and the people living on both banks of the Nistru. The installation of unilateral checkpoints in the Security Zone is not permitted without coordinating the action with the Joint Control Commission and the Joint Military Command and without the consent of the sides taking part in the talks - Chisinau, Tiraspol, the OSCE Mission, Ukraine, and Russia,” said Eugen Carpov.
He also said that the agenda of today’s meeting is to be set. The meeting with the political representative of Tiraspol to the talks Nina Shtanski hasn’t been yet confirmed. “Moldovan bodies and other organizations are monitoring the situation in Varnita so as to prevent a worsening,” added the official.
Last night, the Transnistrian administration decided to set up checkpoints near Varnita. They argued that this way they aim to prevent smuggling. Eugen Carpov said none of the Transnistrian side’s arguments has legal power.
