Tens of thousands of Moldovans came together to show their interest in the European Union in the center of Chisinau, Associated Press says on its website. The meeting was held two weeks before the Vilnius EaP Summit to show Moldova’s hope for signing the Association Agreement with the EU.
The Romanian news agency Mediafax reported that the assembly involved persons from all the country’s regions. They carried the national flag, the flag of the EU and large placards with the name of the district from which they came.
According to the Ukrainian news agency RBC, a statement was adopted during the meeting, by which the Moldovan authorities pledged to resist the national and international pressure and not to deviate from the European course.
The Russian news agency Regnum said the Moldovan opposition and representatives of organizations earlier stated that the people were brought to the assembly by force, using administrative instruments to exert pressure on them. According to the organizers, about 100,000 people took part in the event, while police said the participants totaled approximately 60,000.
The November 3 meeting was staged by the parties of the Pro-European Coalition to show that the Moldovan people chose the path to Europe.
