Ten out of Chisinau’s 50 springs have drinkable water

The analyzed samples of water taken from the wells and springs of Chisinau show that the levels of nitrates and pathogen bacteria in water is still high, even three times higher than normal. The water is drinkable in ten of the about 50 springs existing in the capital city, Vladimir Garaba, president of the Chisinau local organization of the Ecologist Movement of Moldova, has told Info-Prim Neo. The ten springs include several springs in Rascani district, counting one near Rascani Park and two springs on Dimo Street, the spring on Ceucari Street and that located in Socoleni area, the Chisinau 500 spring on Muncesti Street and the spring from Melestiului St. “It is strictly necessary to change and disinfect the water in the accumulation wells located near springs,” Garaba said. The exterior of the springs is satisfactory. Only some work around them is needed: to paint the benches, place garbage bins and change the warning signs, he added. In May, the young ecologists cleaned the springs as part of the Clean Water Week. During the summer holidays, students from Chisinau summer camps will also be engaged in such activities. Together with the Green Spaces Association, the ecologists will purchase paint, disinfectants, lumber, cement, sand and other things needed to tidy up the springs. Galina Leahu, deputy director of the Green Spaces Association, said that works to clean the springs, wells and adjacent areas are carried out throughout the year. The traditional contest “Tidiest Well or Spring” will be held as part of the cleaning works. The results will be made public during the Clean Water Week that takes place at the end of June.
