Ten employees of the Center of Forensic Medicine were detained based on suspicions of illegally receiving payments. The information was made public in a National Anticorruption Center press release.
According to case materials, the money was requested in exchange for false expert reports related to the cause of death. The suspects allegedly received payments ranging from 900 to ten thousand lei, which were not accounted for in the institution's cash register. As a result, the money were allegedly divided between those involved in the scheme, thus causing material damage to the medical institution.
During the investigation, it was found that between July and September the forensic doctors involved in the scheme collected 327 thousand lei.
Two criminal cases have been opened. One investigates passive corruption, while the other investigates fraud. If found guilty, the forensic doctors face up to 15 years in prison, a fine of up to 500 thousand lei and deprivation of the right to hold public positions for up to 15 years.
