Temporary placement center for elderly opened in Calfa, Anenii Noi

The lonely elderly people and those in need will be able to stay at a temporary placement center opened in Calfa, Anenii Noi. The center will provide accommodation, food, medical assistance and psycho-social counseling, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the United Nations Development Program. It will also offer home assistance to about 15 elderly persons who cannot move. The personnel will take warm food, clothes and basic necessities to their homes. Mayor of Calfa Ludmila Ceaglic said this project was implemented with support from the European Union and UNDP Moldova. The center was reconstructed and outfitted. The water pipes and the heat and sewerage systems were replaced. The power networks were rehabilitated. The total cost of the works was about €99,000. The mayor also said that they pan to extend the center so that it provides social rehabilitation services to elderly people from the neighboring villages Roscani, Harbovat, Gura Bacului, Speia, Teia, and Grigoriopol. A number of 40 elderly persons will be now accommodated or will receive assistance at the center during six months. Attending the opening ceremony, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Wolfgang Behrendt said the center is one of the dozens of social institutions that were founded or renovated with the EU’s support in the Security Zone, including in Transnistria. “By such projects, we want to improve the living conditions in the region and all over Moldova. The EU intends to support more similar projects, especially in the social sphere, business and the environment,” said Wolfgang Behrendt. UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Moldova Matilda Dimovska said the center was set up by the concerted effort of the community, local public administration and donors. It is an example of cooperation that should be followed by other settlements of the region. The Support to Confidence Building Measures Project aims to address the necessities of the communities in the Transnistrian region by increasing access to the main economic and social services and to objective and diversified information sources. It is financed by the EU and implemented by the United Nations Development Program.
