The Ministry of Finance allocates 123 million out of 209 million lei, requested by the Chisinau City Hall, to pay teachers their December salaries. In addition, 86 million lei will be allocated from the state budget, on top of the 37 million lei already included in the draft budget rectification, IPN reports.
The salary issue was discussed in two rounds of negotiations. The municipality identified 86 million lei in savings, which can be reallocated to pay salaries. These amounts will fully cover teachers' salary needs and bonuses until the end of this year.
"Taking into account the administrative and staffing constraints faced by the municipality, which make it technically difficult to reallocate higher amounts at this time, it was accepted to allocate additional resources from the state budget," reads a statement issued by the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC).
The issue of teachers' salaries has been debated in the public space after the capital's mayor allegedly accused the government of transferring only 36 million out of 200 million lei to pay teachers' salaries and bonuses for December.
