Citizens believe that teachers of state high schools should have a higher salary. According to the iData Barometer, the net monthly salary of a teacher should be 15,400 lei on average, IPN reports.
Respondents were asked how much a teacher from a state high school, who works full-time, should be paid. The question was an open one and the respondents, respectively, had to name a particular amount.
Most respondents, 32.8%, said that the salary should be between 11,000 and 15,000 lei. Another 23.1% answered 16,000 – 20,000 lei, and 18% consider that the salary should be 10,000 lei. Only 7.7% of those surveyed indicated a salary of up to 10,000 lei, and 5.8% said that it should exceed 20,000 lei. Almost 13% do not know or did not answer.
The survey authors note that the distribution is quite interesting depending on the region. Respondents from Chisinau believe that a teacher should have a net income of 16,800 lei, which means a gross salary of over 20,000 lei. However, in the north, center and south regions, teachers' salaries, in respondents’ opinions, should vary between 14,600 and 15,000 lei. Respondents in Gagauzia were more modest, mentioning an average salary of 14,000 lei for a teacher.
Depending on age, there are not very big differences, but, in general, older people believe that teachers' salaries should be higher. It is interesting that they probably value the work of teachers from state high schools in the Republic of Moldova a little more, according to the research authors.
There are also differences between respondents from urban and rural areas. Those in cities consider that salaries should be higher, of 16,500 lei, and those in villages believe that 14,3000 lei is an appropriate average.
Men indicated higher salaries, of 16,000 lei, while women indicated 15,000 lei. In the authors' opinion, this fact is somehow paradoxical snce the vast majority of teachers are women.
The survey was conducted during March 14-25 and covered a sample of 1,007 people from 294 localities. The maximum sampling error is ±3%.
