Teachers from both sides of Nistru to be informed about democracy

Teachers from both sides of the Nistru River during two years will be taught about the observance and promotion of human rights. The activities, launched on the initiative of the Institute for Democracy, will be supported financially by the European Union within the Support to Confidence Building Measures Program. There will be set up three centers for training about 300 teachers, IPN reports.

Support to Confidence Building Measures Program coordinator Jarek Domanski, the representative of the EU Delegation to Moldova, told a news conference that at the fourth implementation stage, the project was extended to cover the projects of civil society. “I think it is one of the most ambitious and probably hardest projects because it refers to education and topics for discussion that are difficult for the inhabitants from both sides of the Nistru. But I think that we will make progress in implementing the project through the agency of civil society organizations. The key goal of this project is to interact and to assist the people practically,” stated Jarek Domanski.

Methodologist of the Center for Women’s Rights Promotion and Protection Jana Shashakova said the project is designed to inform teachers about democracy and realization of human rights so that they pass on the gained knowledge to students. Within the project, there will be published textbooks and staged common seminars for teachers from both sides of the Nistru. “The project itself will be unable to settle the Transnistrian conflict, which has lasted for many years, but, together with other activities, we will contribute to solving this problem,” stated Jana Shashakova.

Director of the Institute for Democracy Andrei Borshevski said the importance of this project resides in the fact that the young people will learn about their rights and how they can protect these. For the purpose, they need high-quality education, while the high-quality training of teachers in democracy and human rights will increase the quality of education on both sides of the Nistru. “Most of the teachers were trained during the Soviet period, with the low number of young teachers being one of the problems of the education system. The teachers from the system use now outdated teaching methods,” stated Andrei Borshevski.

The two-year project has a budget of about €650,000.
