Teachers from both banks of the Nistru learn about gender equality

Teachers from both sides of the Nistru addressed the issue of equality between men and women in a seminar  entitled “Beware, we see everything!” that was held in Tiraspol. The event was organized by the Institute for Democracy in concert with the Association for Bulgarian Culture “Rodoliubets” of Parcani village and the Center for the Promotion and Protection of Young Women’s Rights, IPN reports.

The event’s moderator Oxana Alistratova, head of the public organization “Interaction” of Tiraspol, told the participants about equality, justice, responsibility and development of gender equality promotion abilities and women’s leadership.

The Institute for Democracy in a press release says the participants could obtain theoretical information and take part in interactive games and learned that gender quality is very important for ensuring sustainable development and stability. In the countries where the difference in the attitude to men and women is big, the probability of internal and external conflicts is higher, while the states where gender quality prevails are predisposed to greater stability and peace.

The significant participation by women in the setting of conflicts and promotion of peace increases the probability of obtaining better results. According to the UN Women’s report, in the case of peace agreements that involve women, the probability for the documents to last for 15 years is by 35% higher. Gender equality also has economic importance. According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the ensuring of gender equality as regards economic opportunities contributes to bigger economic growth, while the UN Women’s report shows the economic equality of women has a beneficial effect on businesses.

Most of the participants in the seminar agreed that gender equality in Moldova is far from the democratic norms. Gender equality is very important for building a stable and prosperous society in Moldova. Social cohesion, peace and prosperity of the state are impossible without social equality.

The event was financed by the European Union within the Confidence Building Measures Program and co-financed by the Government of Sweden and UN Women in accordance with the Project Cooperation Agreement with UN Women. The coordinator of the project, the Institute for Democracy, is a public organization registered in January 2007.
