Over the last ten years there has been a constant shortage of about 2,000 teachers, but the deficit could get even worse due to the ongoing pandemic, says Ghenadie Donos, president of the Education and Science Trade Union.
Speaking at the Chisinau Teachers’ Forum, he said the risk of catching the virus adds to the demotivation of the notoriously low salaries paid in education. Donos also lamented the enduring problem of the aging teaching force, which becomes an increasingly pressing issue in the context of the pandemic.
“The absolute majority of educational institutions in Moldova are ready to start the school year in good conditions which can ensure access to all pupils and students to education. But there are concerns about the shortage of teachers and the increased risks for the teachers aged 60 years and older,” said Ghenadie Donos.
He added that legislative amendments are needed to regulate the procedure or remuneration and temporary inactivity during the pandemic with a full salary. Additional social protection measures are also needed for the teaching force.
Further, says Donos, teachers and education institutions should be compensated for the expenses on personal protective equipment. Budgetary measures are needed to ensure remote education if this solution is chosen. Also, school budgets should be supplemented to remunerate teachers for extra hours.
