TB detainees likely to get forcedly hospitalized when freed
The Moldovan courts will be entitled to order the forced hospitalization of BT suffering prisoners when they are freed. The Parliament Thursday adopted a bill in this respect, in the first reading. The compelling measure is meant to prevent TB spreading, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to deputy Minister of Justice Nicolae Esanu, one of the problems of the penitentiary system is the inmates’ interrupting or refusing to get treatment against tuberculosis. If set free sick people, their family members and other people contacting with them run an enhanced risk to catch the disease, the deputy Minister reasoned the move.
The forced hospitalization will be considered following a notification from the jail administration, concomitantly with solving the matters related to spare him/her from punishment. The court will take into account the doctor’s note, as he is obliged to attend that session.
For the second reading, MP Eva Gudumac suggested to consider the opportunity that the TB sick, also suffering from HIV/AIDS, should enjoy specialized treatment. According to her, 30% from the inmates with TB also suffer from AIDS.
Moldova is among the European states with the highest rates of tuberculosis spreading. According to statistics, in January 2008, 4,759 TB sick were recorded, as 3,545 of them were traced out in 2007 only. In 2006, 4,602 cases were recorded.
