The taxi driver who three months ago struck mortally by his cab a couple at a crosswalk in Chisinau will stand trial. According to the police, the driver violated the traffic rules and thus caused the death of two persons. Also, the taxi driver was under the influence of drugs when the accident occurred, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the 22-year-old man was driving at a speed of over 100 km/h. This faces 7 to 12 years in jail and ban on driving for a period of up to five years.

As a result of the accident, the police notified the taxi service where the man worked and asked that the employees should be thoroughly examined before they start work. An approach was made to the Licensing Chamber to annul the license issued to the given business entity.

The accident happened at the end of last December, not far from the market “Calea Basarabiei”. The taxi driver didn’t give way to the pedestrians who were crossing the street legally and struck them. The husband and wife died on the spot. They were aged 56 and 58.
