Taxes for parking cars by roadside
The Chisinau administration may institute taxes for the drivers who leave their cars in the street, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The cars are parked on sidewalks, lawns and by the roadside. They cause jams and hinder the passersby,” Vladimir Garaba, the head of the Chisinau local organization of the Ecologist Movement, said in a roundtable meeting at the City Hall.
A recent study shows 30% of the drivers agree to pay a parking tax of 1 leu, while 27% would pay 2 lei. According to Vladimir Garaba, this tax would bring incomes of tens of thousands of lei to the local budget.
Deputy mayor Vlad Cotet said this initiative will be proposed to the Municipal Council for examination. As regards the construction of new parking lots, Vlad Cotet said the streets of the capital city are narrow and it is hard to find places were to build them. In order to widen the streets, the General Urban Plan must be modified.
“Given that the traffic is heavier in central Chisinau and the streets in this part of the city are the narrowest, there is not enough parking space. This is a complex problem that must be dealt with,” said the deputy mayor.
Vasile Chicu, the head of a construction company, said in many European countries the parking taxes in downtown are higher than on the outskirts and this is done in order to prevent congestion.
There are more than 150,000 units of transport in Chisinau.
