Tax Service starts implementing indirect methods of determining income

The State Tax Inspectorate has assigned 89 agents to perform indirect determination of individuals' taxable income, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The application of these indirect methods may sometimes affect the private life of a person. This is why a small number of tax officers will be employed in this process. They signed confidentiality contracts to prevent any possible leaks”, State Tax Inspectorate deputy head Gheorghe Cojocaru told a news conference on Monday. The indirect methods of determining income involve an analysis of the fiscal situation of individuals using other information than that contained in their tax returns. There are three most frequently used methods of determining income indirectly: the method of expenses, the method of money flows and the method of property. Indirect sources are any sources able to provide documents, information, accounts and other evidence on the individual inspected, said Gheorghe Cojocaru. These methods will apply to individuals who aren't engaged in entrepreneurial activity and who obtain during one fiscal year assets and funds totaling 1 million lei or more, excepting individuals who started building a house before 1 January 2012, and also to persons whose annual expenses exceed 500,000 lei. The amendments to the Fiscal Code which introduced the application of indirect methods for determining income were published in the Official Gazette on September 14.
