The director of the public association ProMediu Tatiana Țugui said that the problem of waste management is not a new one and was first included on the agenda of governments 15-20 years ago. Although there was a strategy with a series of actions, the implementation of these was often delayed, also because of the politicization of this subject.

In IPN’s public debate "Sorting and recycling waste. How to ensure a sustainable future", Tatiana Țugui said that the population's perception of solutions for better waste management has changed for the better, and where conditions were created, the people are very receptive.

The association’s director noted that the issue of waste management was on the agenda of all governments. Over 10 years ago, a strategy that refers to waste management, including the building of regional landfills, was approved. Unfortunately, the implementation of the program has not taken place as originally planned. The responsibility for this is borne at all levels, starting from communities, local public authorities and so on.

Tatiana Țugui said that over time, the sites for building landfills were changed. Most of the times, the problem is politicized when it comes to choosing the place. There were cases when the place was changed for several times because a party comes and chooses a place, but another party then comes and changes it. Moreover, the opposition always incites the population to oppose the construction of such waste dumps.

In her opinion, it is time for good waste management initiatives to be popularized on all possible platforms, including social media. In the capital city, the situation is better in terms of garbage sorting, even if not everywhere. People sort the garbage where the platforms are equipped with containers for separate waste collection.
