Tactile paving in central Chisinau meets standards

The tactile paving set up by the municipality in the center of Chisinau meets the standards and will facilitate movement through the city of persons with visual impairments. Elena Stajila, jurist at the Center of Legal Assistance for Persons with Disabilities, after a field visit told IPN that tactile paving is built correctly and it is good that the authorities take accusation measures for persons with visual impairments. The jurist reminded that the Chisinau City Hall was obliged to install tactile paving following a lawsuit filed by the Center of Legal Assistance for Persons with Disabilities.

There are set up two types of tactile paving – with dot tiles and with line tiles. Dot tiles are placed where there are obstacles, while line tiles shows the direction. Elena Stajila called on the municipal authorities to design tactile paving every time a street is to be repaired.

“We welcome the authorities’ openness to take reasonable accommodation measures for persons with disabilities. We would like such paving to exist on sidewalks as well so that the visually impaired persons know the direction they follow and walk within the limits,” said the jurist.

At the start of this week, the municipal authorities started to set up tactile paving in central Chisinau. Igor Gamretski, head of the Public Transport and Communications Division has told IPN that such paving will be placed on the streets Stefan cel Mare, Constantin Negruzzi and Vasile Alecsandri by July. Afterward, tactile paving will appear on the streets Tighina, Alexandru cel Bun and 31 august.
