The deadline for completing the transition to digital terrestrial television in Moldova has been extended until March 2020, IPN reports, with reference to a bill to amend and supplement the Law on Electronic Communications and other legal acts that was approved by the Cabinet. The initial deadline was June 17, 2015, but this was later extended until December 31, 2017, IPN reports.
Deputy Prime Minister Octavian Calmic explained that the broadcasters are not ready to create regional multiplexes or to start to broadcast through multiplexes with national coverage. They have neither technical means nor money.
The informative note to the bill says a part of the broadcasters that obtained broadcast licenses for using the capacities of Multiplex A with national coverage requested the Broadcasting Coordination Council to extend the period by which they were to start to broadcast through the multiplex, invoking financial reasons.
It was thus proposed synchronizing the completion of the transition to digital television with the period of validity of licenses for using analog-signal TV channels and radio frequencies, stated Octavian Calmic.
