Swine fever restrictions lifted in Mereni

The National Food Safety Agency lifted the restrictions for the village of Mereni, Anenii Noi district, after 60 days of quarantine imposed following an outbreak of African swine fever that was confirmed on June 8.

The Agency said active epidemics remain in Giurgiulesti, Cahul, Vulcanesti and Comrat in southern Moldova.

Twenty-two pigs in a private household were affected by the virus in the Mereni outbreak in June.

The virus is innocuous to people, but it is highly contagious and causes significant damage to animal husbandry. When an outbreak is confirmed, the only safe way to prevent it from spreading further is to slaughter the affected animals and disinfect the pens, the surrounding areas and the utensils used.
