Sweden to provide €52m to Moldova to promote democracy

During the next four years, Sweden will disburse by €13 million to Moldova yearly for promoting democracy, human rights and gender equality, developing infrastructure and the market. The financial support is provided under the agreement on the development cooperation strategy between Moldova and Sweden for 2011-2014, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Government. Charlotte Petri Gornitzka, director general of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, said the new cooperation strategy shows Sweden’s readiness to support Moldova’s aspirations to become part of the EU. “Sweden will provide assistance for developing more efficient public administration that will ensure transparency and reduce corruption, increasing thus the people’s trust in the Government. Significant progress was already made in this respect,” said Charlotte Petri Gornitzka. He also said that gender equality and promotion of women in politics and business is another component of the agreement. Prime Minister Vlad Filat said the European integration is a major internal and foreign policy objective of Moldova. “The achievement of this objective will allow our country to integrate into a security, stability and prosperity system governed by democratic values and respect for the fundamental human rights and freedoms,” he stated. The Premier stressed that Moldova counts on Sweden’s support in creating a transparent, efficient and responsible administration and in more efficiently using the energy sources. The signing of the agreement represents a continuation of the implemented partnership principles between the Government of Moldova and the donor community, aimed at making the official assistance for development more efficient. The document was signed in March 2010.
