Sweden provides €120,000 to counter disinformation related to elections

Sweden offers Moldova new support, in the amount of about €120,000, to counter disinformation related to elections. This additional support will complement the current support for the independent media and cybersecurity in Moldova, Christian Danielsson, State Secretary to Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall, who is on a visit to Moldova during April 24-25, has announced, IPN reports.

“I’m impressed by Moldova’s resilience to Russia’s hybrid attacks and the multitude of crises that occurred as a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Sweden will remain committed to supporting Moldova in this difficult situation,” said Christian Danielsson, being quoted in a press release of the Embassy of Sweden in Chisinau.

The Embassy noted that the working visit to Chisinau is an opportunity to discuss how Sweden can develop its cooperation with Moldova to support the country’s efforts to join the EU and do reforms, as well as to strengthen its resilience ahead of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Sweden’s support for Moldova has grown since the launch of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In 2023, the support amounted to €42 million. In October 2023, Sweden announced an energy package for Moldova worth €25 million. This support is dedicated to vulnerable households in Moldova and will contribute to long-term energy efficiency and infrastructure development in the country.
