Svetlana Chifa, head of Chisinau's child protection department, will stay for the next 30 days under house arrest, according to a decision by the Centru District Court, which replaces a 72-hour preventive arrest warrant. Chifa is suspected by the prosecutors of “abuse of authority and criminal interests in organizing international adoptions”, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The accusations are so pathetic that even I, as a person who doesn't practice law, am ashamed of these trumped-up charges, which are aimed at humiliating and intimidating me. But we'll see how democratic our country is. It upsets me that my acquaintances could actually believe this insane things”, said Svetlana Chifa. “All the materials related to the adoptions are in the possession of the Prosecutor General's Office. The prosecutors will have the opportunity to examine every tiny detail of each document and convince themselves what the truth is”, said the suspect. Chifa lamented the detention conditions in the frigid cell she was placed during the preventive arrest, where she had no blankets or pillow to sleep. “In the morning they give you water, tea and a piece of bread. The second meal was borscht and goulash, and for dinner they give you another piece of bread”, she complained Chifa. Before the hearing in court, Chifa was examined by a doctor who diagnosed her with high blood pressure and tachycardia. Moldova's Prosecutor General Valeriu Gurbulea told reporters on Thursday that Svetlana Chifa was prosecuted in three criminal investigations on charges of arranging illegal international adoptions. “Chifa organized a criminal scheme which I'd rather call not international adoption, but a terribly cynical, legally disguised form of trafficking in children. A network of persons was employed to find the healthiest children, to invent cover stories making these children badly sick and thus rendering them ineligible for domestic adoption. Big pots of money were involved in every case”, said Gurbulea. The Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN), whose member, and leader of the women's wing, Svetlana Chifa is, consider her arrest to be an abuse. They also think the arrest is a sign of the upcoming election campaign.
