Suspension of visa regime with EU is not being discussed, MEP

MEP Andi Cristea stated for TVR Moldova channel that the problem of suspension of the visa regime with the EU is not being discussed. The statement was made following a report by the European Commission on the visa suspension mechanism, which shows that the situation in the Republic of Moldova is worrisome and there is an evident decline as regards the commitments, IPN reports.

The MEP said the report centers on the fulfillment of the conditions of the visa-free regime by the Republic of Moldova. The conditions do not have an implementation period and reforms should be done continuously.

According to openmediahub.com, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, which are the first and last Eastern partners of the EU that obtained the right to travel visa-free for their citizens, are advised to take immediate action to accelerate reforms, including measures to fight corruption and money laundering.

The European Commission warns that the lack of progress, especially in fighting corruption, endangers the fulfillment of the requirements and asks to ensure the independence of the National Integrity Authority and the Criminal Assets Recovery Agency. The report also shows that small improvements were witnessed in the security and public order sectors.

Since the visa requirements were abolished for Moldova in April 2014, more than 980,000 Moldovans made a total of 2.7 million trips to the EU.
