The Supreme Court of Justice accepted to examine the appeal filed by the lawyers for the former President of Romania Traian Băsescu, president of honor of the National Unity Party of the Republic of Moldova, against President Igor Dodon’s decree by which Traian Băsescu was stripped of Moldovan nationality. A decision to this effect was taken in the absence of the parties on October 24, IPN reports.
On its website, the Supreme Court of Justice said the appeal will be examined in a hearing on November 7.
On a social networking site, National Unity Party vice president Ana Guțu wrote that the Supreme Court of Justice on November 7 can take one of three possible decisions: to uphold the decision of the lower court and Igor Dodon’s decree will thus remain valid and Traian Băsescu will lose Moldovan nationality; to send the case back to the Appeals Court so that this is retried, or to nullify Igor Dodon’s decree and Traian Băsescu will thus regain the nationality of the Republic of Moldova.
The Chisinau Appeals Court at the start of this May rejected as groundless the appeal submitted by lawyer Andrei Bivol, who requested to annul the decree on the withdrawal of nationality. This way the judgement passed by the first court at the end of this January was upheld. Later the Chisinau Appeals Court’s decision was challenged in the Supreme Court of Justice.
The litigant, President of the Republic of Moldova Igor Dodon, said Traian Băsescu intentionally didn’t inform the Moldovan authorities about the fact that he was under investigation when he filed the application for nationality.
Andrei Bivol, the lawyer for Traian Băsescu, said the ex-President of Romania received the Moldovan nationality in an exceptional way, for special merits towards the Republic of Moldova. The law does not envision the obligation to present relevant documents in this case.
