Supreme Court of Justice cuts sentence for Ion Rusu

The Supreme Court of Justice decided to reduce the punishment imposed on Ion Rusu, the de facto administrator of Caravita Co SRL and brother-in-law of ex-Premier Vlad Filat. The jail term was cut from five years to three years and four months. The judgment was passed on April 6. The full judgment will become available on May 4. The other appealed decisions were upheld, IPN reports.

By their appeal, the lawyers asked to retry the case, to pronounce a new judgment and to order to put Ion Rusu on probation. They also requested to annul the complementary punishment - to liquidate the legal entity Caravita Co SRL.

The decision to sentence Ion Rusu to five years in prison was pronounced in November 2015. He was found guilty of money laundering and causing of considerable damage to Banca de Economii.
