Supreme Council of Magistracy has four new members

Parliament on March 17 confirmed four new members of the Supreme Council of Magistracy (SCM) chosen from among law professors. These are Carolina Ciugureanu-Mihailuță, Elena Belei, Valentina Coptileț and Ion Crețu, IPN reports.

The chairman of the Parliament’s commission on appointments and immunities Vladimir Bolea said that the contest involved 17 candidates. One candidate wasn’t accepted because this didn’t present all the required documents and his view on the SCM. On March 13, the commission held the contest and the four winning candidates were selected according to their score.

MP Adrian Candu, who heads the Pro Moldova Group, said the rules of the completion were changed during the contest. The composition of the commission was modified during the contest and the opposition wasn’t represented on this.

According to PAS MP Sergiu Litvinenco, the Socialists changed the regulations so that the president of the SCM could be chosen from among law professors, “distributing” thus this post too.

Socialist MP Grigore Novac noted that a number of NGOs approved of the four new members of the SCM.

Carolina Ciugureanu-Mihailuță, Elena Belei, Valentina Coptileț and Ion Crețu weren’t present in Parliament and the MPs could not thus put questions to them.

Pro Moldova, the PAS and the Shor Party didn’t take part in the vote.
