The supporters of the Pushkin Museum cause picketed the Chisinau City Hall on April 14, asking that the authorities stop the demolition of architectural monuments in the city’s historical center. The protesters demanded that the chief architect of Chisinau Vlad Modarca and deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu be dismissed, Info-Prim Neo reports. Veaceaslav Iordache, co-president of the organization “My Dear City”, said that this is the sixth protest. The people came together to warn the authorities about the danger to which the Pushkin Museum House is exposed. The house is located behind the Academy of Economic Studies. A 12-story apartment building is being erected opposite the museum. The works performed on the building site cause fissures in the walls of the museum. The protests demand setting up a commission of architects to examine the situation on the spot. Another protester Vitalie Voznoi said the historical monuments must be preserved and restored, not destroyed. He said that the rain did not stop them from coming to express their dissatisfaction. Pensioner Engelsina Beloconi said she has lived in Chisinau since 1946 and will fight for the historical monuments so that the city does not lose its identity. Deputy chief architect Nicon Zaporojan said the Pushkin Museum is not in danger and the construction works carried out in the area do not affect the architectural monument.
