Superior Council of Magistracy elected its chairperson

Sergiu Caraman was elected chairman of the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) by the votes of 7 of the 9 members of the Council, IPN reports.

Aliona Miron also contended in the competition and garnered two votes.

Sergiu Caraman, who since July 2023 had held the post of chairman of the Council on an interim basis, thanked his mates for their trust. “Thank you for your vote of confidence. It is a vote that gives me hope and strength to move forward. During one year, we have demonstrated to the entire society that the SCM is strong. We are going through a period during which we are still forming as a group, but I’m sure that, after we pass it, we will be able to deliver results that will be appreciated, both to society and to the judicial system,” said Sergiu Caraman.

Sergiu Caraman was elected a member of the SCM for a six-year term at the General Assembly of Judges in April 2023.

According to the legislation, the chairperson of the Superior Council of Magistracy is elected by secret ballot for a period of two years, with a majority of votes of most of the members of the Council, and holds the position on a permanent basis. The chairperson of the Council cannot be re-elected.
