The past elections were not a sample of democracy, but much to the contrary, a disgrace for Moldova, as voters let themselves be bought and manipulated by oligarchic forces, thinks Vlad Bilețchi, the leader of the pro-unification organization ODIP and a Liberal Party candidate in last Sunday’s plebiscite.
“This is an indication that in Moldova political culture has been intentionally degraded, because an impoverished and very poorly informed population is easier to manipulate”, stated Bilețchi during the talk show “Țara” on Vocea Basarabiei TV.
Vlad Bilețchi thinks that now the “most toxic components of Moldovan politics” emerged victorious in these elections. “This means that the people are desperate, that they have been pushed to the limit where they only believe in those who have power, money and ability to sandbag others into doing their bidding. Democracy, pluralism of ideas, integrity, the candidates’ legitimacy haven’t been prime concerns”.
Lawyer Teodor Cârnaț, a candidate for People’s Voice Party, declared that the past Sunday was “a black day for democracy and rule of law in the Republic of Moldova”. “This was confirmed by a voter turnout that hit a record low since independence. Last Sunday proved that in Moldova virtues like integrity, competence, candidates with lifelong moral uprightness don’t matter. All you need is to have a lot of money to influence voters by less legal means. And this undermines the freedom of last Sunday’s elections”, stated Cârnaț.
“The parties that have entered Parliament are far from democracy, far from the democratic rules that qualify you for law-making”, added Cârnaț.
