Suburban family threatens to commit suicide in front of City Hall building

A family from Chisinau's suburban town of Codru threatened on Wednesday, May 28, to commit suicide by setting themselves on fire right in front of the City Hall building if Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca didn't step in to settle a dispute with Codru Mayor Vitalie Mazur, accused by the protesters of trying to abusively deprive them of a plot of land they bought several years ago, Info-Prim Neo reports. The disgruntled parents also brought three children with them, including two very young ones. The police officers managed to persuade them to surrender their incendiary bottles, but the protesters promised to return if they didn't get help. Sergei Diacov, the head of the family, says the mayor of Codru is trying to initiate proceedings in order to obtain the annulment of a town council decision that warranted the sale of the 59-are plot. The man thinks the mayor acts like this in order to pressure the family into greasing his palms. If he doesn't get what he wants, he would tell prosecutors who will execute his orders anyway, the man complains. Chisinau Councilor Oleg Cernei suggested the family should move their protests in front of the Prosecutor's Office building. “It's not the first time that the Chisinau Prosecutor's Office, inexcusably late, remembers that certain land plots haven't been alloted through auction procedures as it should be”, said the councilor, adding that the intervention of the the municipal authorities in this dispute would mean intrusion in the affairs of the Codru local authorities. The mayor of Codru town could not be reached for comment.
