The Union of Jurists of Moldova, in partnership with four university centers, are launching the guide “Methods of Preventing Corruption on Education Sector” with a view to encouraging the students not to give bribe. In the conference held to launch the guidebook, the Union’s president Gheorghe Avornic, who is the rector of the University of European Political and Economic Studies “Constantin Stere”, said the phenomenon of corruption affects first of all those who give bribe, IPN reports.
“I think the students understood very well who suffers the consequences. It is they who lose. We must finally start to combat the traffic of influence and bribery in education institutions. We now speak about the four university centers involved in the project, but our example can be beneficial to other institutions too,” stated Gheorghe Avornic.
“Of the 100 lei that somebody gives at a one-stop shop, 20-30 lei climb up the vertical as bribe. The students know well only one side of the coin – that poverty generates corruption. But they do not perceive the other side – that corruption generates poverty too. The students drew conclusions as regards the negative influence of corruption on the political regime as well,” said project coordinator project Raisa Grecu.
The authors of the guide proposed introducing mandatory subjects concerning corruption in the teaching program. For universities, a solution is to sign an anticorruption pact between the Senate and the Rector’s Office, by which to pledge to eliminate corruption from the education system.
The guidebook was printed with the support of the United Nations Democracy Fund through East Europe Foundation, which allocated US$10,000.
