Strong wind blows down large tree in downtown Chisinau
A heavy elm in downtown Chisinau has been uprooted on Friday afternoon by a gust of wind. The elm damaged two cars, parked nearby.
The interim chief of the Association of green spaces administration, Eliferie Haruta, told Info-Prim Neo, that the 60-70 year old elm has been uprooted by a strong gust of wind. When falling, the tree downed some power lines and strongly damaged two cars parked nearby. The source says that immediately an intervention team arrived to the place in order to unblock the zone and transport the tree, but the owners of the cars didn’t let them work until the experts from the ASITO Insurance Company arrived.
Eliferie Haruta says that also on Friday, other 3 trees fell because of the wind – two poplars on the Marinescu Street, 15/1 and one on the Zimbrului Street, 10.
Moldovan Meteorological Service placed on its website a warning according to which, in the period from January 19 to 20, on a great part of the republic’s territory wind from North West 9-14 m/s is forecasted, with intensification up to 17-22 m/s.
Meteorologists consider that the intensification of wind is normal for this period of the year. Thus, the weather has been unusually warm, and the growth of wind is determined by the speedy movement of a cold air mass from the North Pole across the European continent.
