Stricter inspections at school eateries in Chisinau

The Chisinau General Division of Education, Youth and Sport ordered toughening up inspections at the eateries of schools. The move follows reports about the identification of an illegal scheme to appropriate food products intended for school eateries, employed by drivers supplying food products to eateries together with eateries’ chiefs, IPN reports.

In the February 8 meeting of officials of Chisinau services and divisions, the Division’s deputy head Alexandru Fleas said that inspections were carried out both at the involved eateries and at storehouses. “No illegalities were identified at the central storehouse, but the transportation of the goods and their hand-over to eateries’ heads were performed with illegalities. Consequently, the scheme could not be implemented without the involvement of the chiefs of eateries who received these products,” he stated.

Alexandru Fleas also said that in order to establish a number of circumstances and to avoid similar cases, it was ordered toughening up inspections at the school canteens in Chisinau.

According to the General Police Inspectorate, three men from the municipality of Chisinau and Ialoveni district were arrested on suspicion that they appropriated goods in extremely large amounts. The men worked as drivers-distributors of food products to school eateries. At the end of the day, the merchandize that wasn’t taken to the school eateries was transferred into the vehicle of one of the suspects. A part of the food products were distributed between them, while the other goods were sold illegally. This way, the men daily appropriated food products to the value of about 2,000-2,500 lei. A part of the earned money was given to the heads of canteens.
