The strategy for ensuring gender equality for 2016-2020 was worked out and is proposed for public consultations. The bill is aimed at fighting stereotypes in society and at promoting non-violent communication, Diana Doros, deputy division head at the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family, stated in a roundtable meeting staged by the Association of Independent Press, IPN reports.
One of the strategy’s goals is to promote gender equality in the media and publicity products. The authors of the strategy identified a series of problems, including the poor visibility of women in informative materials, different and tendentious treatment of women in relation to men, perpetuation of stereotypes and sexist images, including in advertisements, the lack of an indicator for monitoring gender equality.
In this regard, the draft strategy suggests including the examination of the gender issue in the curriculum at faculties of journalism, establishing tripartite partnerships between the authorities, civil society and the mass media for carrying out nationwide campaigns for promoting gender equality, and making the media outlets and advertising agencies more responsible when featuring gender equality in their products.
The meeting also discussed the results obtained by the adoption of the law that institutes a 40% gender quota for lists of candidates for local and parliamentary elections. Diana Doros said this law covered a long way. It was broadly consulted and 16 legal acts were amended following an analysis of the national legislation.
Association of Independent Press executive director Petru Macovei said Law No. 71, which supplements and modifies a number of legal acts, was drafted with the assistance of NGOs, media outlets and state institutions that realize the importance of such changes.
