The Government on March 9 approved the strategy for ensuring equality between women and men in Moldova for 2017 -2021 and the plan of action for implementing this document that has five general objectives, followed by specific objectives. The strategy aims to ensure a complex approach to gender equality, to strengthen the institutional gender equality ensuring mechanism, to combat stereotypes in society and to promote non-violent communication.
Contacted by IPN, representatives of organizations that promote gender equality anticipated to what extent the stagey will eliminate gender inequalities in the current conditions in Moldova.
According to the president of honor of Gender-Centru Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, the document is rather good, but the ensuring of its implementation and its financing remain a problem. That’s why their organization aims to ensure strict monitoring in the future.
“The strategy was worked out taking into account the recommendations formulated by ministries, local public authorities and civil society. Yes, some of the segments are covered less, but will be yet developed. We aim to monitor the implementation of the gender aspect of these documents,” stated Valentina Bodrug-Lungu.
Director of the Partnership for Development Center Alexei Buzu said the Government could have been more ambitious in its plans detailed in the strategy, including in such areas as labor market, health, education, equitable representation of men and women in elective posts.
“I hope the Government, when it approved this strategy, also agreed a consistent budget to make sure that all the planned activities are carried out. I would like the Government or other authorities not to have institutional excuses and say that they had good intentions, but didn’t have enough money to put these into practice,” stated Alexei Buzu.
The objectives of the strategy for ensuring equality between women and men were set for the next five years and reflect the commitments assumed by Moldova at international level.
The measures defined in the plan of action will be carried out with money budgeted for the purpose by the public authorities involved in the implementation of the strategy and from others sources.
